IMO, every day he stays silent (Weber, that is), he looks worse and worse. As soon as the arrest warrant was put out for Jamar Smith, he should've been kicked off the team.

His silence only says Jamar is not being dismissed.

I don't think the basketball program has any standards.

I don't think Jamar should still be on the team, either, but why do you need an immediate statement out of the Athletic Department?

They've stated that they want to get all the facts first, and it's not like we are in the season and Jamar is practicing with the team and playing in live games.

Let them do their detective work and make their statement.

Their "wait and see what everyone else does" approach is ridiculous. They continue to look like they don't know what they are doing or have any rules or standards at all.

They should know their players (Jamar). Weber should have already met with Jamar and know the story. I thought he was on a "short leash", and he should have been being "monitored" in some fashion.

Their reaction time and action to these things are critical in the overall discipline and structure and reputation of the program.

EVERY situation has been a wait and see. They take forever to take any disciplinary action. They act like they have no idea what the facts are until a court of law or some other governing body makes a decision. Why do they not seem to know the players at all?

And with each situation, the actions and charges get worse. I know you never want to jump to conclusions, but in this situation, Jamar lost his 'wait and get all the facts' right a long time ago.

I agree with you PIF......Problem is those of us that hang out on message boards expect and demand immediate information....when in fact the rest of the world doesnt quite operate that way....We've all seen it a million times, intitial reports arent quite what they seem to be, but opinions are all based on the initial report etc etc..

But we're talking about close family type situations. You hear about how well these coaches know the kids and how close they are and how they are like a family. "Bruce knows what's best for Jamar", etc. They are together and working out year round. I don't think actions should matter whether the season is in, for high profile athletes getting a free education and bringing so much attention to the University. Thank goodness it is now instead of in the middle of the season.

I completely disagree that it has anything to do with a demand for information. At least not for me. I'm suggesting that Weber should be able to uncover the truth without the help of the legal system or a student board of discipline, or whatever else they wait for.

Maybe it's just me, but their wating and silence looks bad, IMO. I don't think Jamar is done at Illinois, or it would have been done.

Maybe Weber does have the information he needs and is not going to be dismissing Jamar. Maybe I'm giving too much credit to the relationship they have. I just think it looks bad for the program. The action by Jamar, and the lack of reaction from the school.

And also, just like in the real world, your rights and the situation changes when you are a convicted felon on probation, and on a (huge) second chance.

MJG24,

I agree with you on that they are close family type relationships. Which to me means, their first instinct may be to find out what's best for Jamar. If they need to get him help, then maybe that's it. Or maybe they want his parents/guardians down there to discuss everything. I don't know, I'm not close to the situation.

It's not going to kill the UofI and Weber and the basketball program to wait a few days in the offseason before releasing to the public what will happen to Jamar and the basketball program. I doubt if Weber really cares about what the media or message posters think about his and Guenther's timeliness to react to this. He withstood a lot more heat during the DUI with Smith/Carlwell.

As I said before, I think JS should be gone from the team, and I will be disappointed if he's not, given the current news we have on this situation. But to me it's not a big deal if it's today, tomorrow or a week from now.

When your vice takes priority over responsibilities it's a problem, plain and simple. I like having a good time like the next guy, but enuf is enuf...

Looks like Calvin Brock's future on the team is a question also:
