Richwoods Wrestling

What is the talk with the new coaching staff as far as offseason sports? I know basketball, track and baseball have always been accepted, but it seems like we never have alot of guys from football wrestling. The excuse has always been the 5th quarter program. Coach Penny has been lifting the wrestling team for the last 4 years and the guys who do crossover always seem to be standout players in the fall. With Brown being a former wrestler, do you think he will be more apt to encourage kids to go out for the wrestling team? Even if it starts with the underclass, it would be good. If after their first year they are not interested in the sport thats fine, but it truely gives you an edge on the field, especially with mental toughness.

One of the best benefits to having Brown as HC is his off season workout program. When I was at RHS Easter was the O/D Line coach as well the wrestling coach. He did not get a lot to turnout for wrestling. I know several guys wrestled just to kiss his butt. Most of them did not wrestle their SR year after football season. However, most of the best wrestlers were football players. I don't think (Maughn, Ziebert, Williams, Gordon, Davis etc.) several wrestled to get on his good side or to be better football players. They just simply enjoyed wrestling and were good at it.

For what ever reason wrestling at RHS has always been their weakest sport. Don't know why. Maybe every other school is just better.

I wish the new staff the best.

The biggest problem has been numbers. Every year there are athletes walking around after school, but they are going to football workouts instead of a sport. My first year out there we were allowed to talk to the underclass and had high numbers of fb players. the next year I was back at Woody (long story), and the numbers were way down even kids that had been out the year before. When I ran into the kids they said the were urged to show up to winter workouts.
